The Vickers Vimy was one of the first heavy bomber aircraft of the world. It was produced with the intention of flying long range missions into Germany from bases in Great Britain and France.

The Vickers Vimy was a biplane, made primarily of wood covered by fabric. It had a crew of three and the capability of carrying over 2,400 lbs. of bombs internally.

The aircraft were produced too late to see any action during the War. However, Vickers Vimy aircraft continued in service with the RAF after World War I through 1929.

Some Vimy aircraft were converted for mail service use. Others were used to train future bomber pilots, and other for parachuting.

A civil air version of the Vimy was produced that had a wide fuselage. Another version was used as an air ambulance. Military Vickers Vimy aircraft were also used as troop transports.

The Vickers Vimy is probably best known for its June 14, 1919 record flight. A specially prepared Vimy took off from Newfoundland flying east, over the Atlantic to Ireland. Captain John Alcock and Lt. Arthur Whitten-Brown flew their Vimy for over 16 hours before landing.

Alcock and Whitten-Brown were knighted and split a cash prize of 10,000 pounds from the Daily Mail newspaper for their crossing of the Atlantic.

A total of some 240 Vickers Vimy aircraft of all types were produced.
