NOTE: RADIO CONTROL AIRPLANES ARE ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE PAGE.
The
Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter was the first fighter/bomber of the British
Air Force to have a machine gun capable of firing through its
propeller arc.
The
1 1/2 Strutter was not named after a dance. It got its name from the
half length struts combined with full length struts which secured the
upper wing of the biplane to the fuselage.
When
it first saw action, the Strutter proved a successful fighter against
enemy aircraft of the time. It was well liked by pilots for its
stable flight qualities, range, and fire power.
The
French were impressed by the performance of the Strutter, and
undertook their production. However, by the time sufficient
quantities of the Strutter were available for deployment over France,
enemy aircraft could outperform it. The aircraft was then removed
from front-line fighter aircraft duties.
The
Strutter proved very useful in its non-fighter role. The aircraft
was used as a sea plane, bomber, for training, reconnaissance, and
for flying from ice and snow when equipped with skies.
When
used as a sea plane, the Strutter could be launched from the top of
battleship main gun turrets.
In
addition to Great Britain and France, Sopwith Strutter fighters were
also used by the United States, the Soviet Air Force, and in smaller quantities, by the air
forces of a number of countries throughout the world
A
total of over 5,000 Sopwith Strutter aircraft of all types were
produced; over 4,000 by French factories.
