Nitro Planes rc Super Cub.

The NitroPlanes rc Super Cub, shown above, has a wingspan of 41" and a length of 28". Included is a 1750 kV motor.

Production of the Super Cub began in 1949 and continued until 1994. Today many are still in use flying from remote airfields as bush aircraft, for spraying crops, as trainers, glider and banner tugs, and in general aviation.

A rc Super Cub from Nitroplanes.

The NitroPlanes rc Super Cub above has a wingspan of 71 1/2" and length is 46 1/2". Recommended power is a .52 four stroke engine. Weight is about 5 1/2 lbs.

The preceeding are just two of many rc Super Cub airplanes available as ARF, RTF, and kits from NitroPlanes in all sizes and color schemes.

Super Cub aircraft have been equipped with skis and floats and are used by police and government agencies around the world for a number of functions including enforcement and patrol duties.

The rc Super Cub from a Dynaflite kit.

The rc Super Cub from a Dynaflite kit has a wingspan of 104". The giant scale rc airplane needs a 1.10 four stroke or bigger engine for power.

Although it resembles its predecessor, the Super Cub is a different aircraft. First and foremost, the engine of the Super Cub has more than double the power.   Large, extremely effective flaps extend from the root of the wing to almost its middle. The aircraft has more interior space, larger, higher, more comfortable seats, and better visibility from the cockpit. The Super Cub is designed to be piloted from the front of its tandem seats.

Hannu Vuorinen's rc Super Cub.

The rc Super Cub built by Hannu Vuorien has a wingspan of 168", weighs around 51 lbs. and is powered by a TM 685 motor.

Flying the Super Cub requires a bit of athleticism to access its front seat. You get in by stepping on its tire, maneuvering as if you are getting out of a pool to sit on its edge, and then pivoting to get your legs into the cockpit. Then its just a matter of pulling yourself up into the seat.

Hobby Zone rc Super Cub.

The rc Super Cub from Hobby Zone is a foamy that has a wingspan of 48" and a length of 32 1/2". A Speed 480 type motor powers the 1 1/2 lb. model airplane.

People used to the standard Cub will notice a more complete layout of avionics in the cockpit of the Super Cub. Most electronics are grouped together.

Pat's Custom Models rc Super Cub.

The rc Super Cub built from a kit for sale by Pat's Custom Models is made from balsawood and ply with provisions for flaps. Wingspan is 53", suggested motor is 1,000 kV, and weight is around 1 lb. 1 oz.

Ground handling of the aircraft is excellent and presents no particular problem in calm winds. During strong cross winds, the aircraft wants to turn into the wind. Visibility is excellent for a tail dragger.

During the take off roll the tail will raise quickly from the runway. Only the slightest pressure is necessary on the rudder pedals to keep the Super Cub tracking straight. After rolling a few more feet it will fly itself off of the runway. It will initially climb at a comfortable 950 feet per minute. Controls are solid with positive response without being overly heavy.

Stalls are what you would expect in an aircraft with such a light wing loading. Rather than a break, the Super Cub will eventually settle into a controlled squat. A little forward stick is all that's necessary to get it flying again.

Landing approaches without flaps can be made at around 64 mph. At that speed the Super Cub tends to float down the runway a way before settling down. So long as its landing without a strong cross wind, very little rudder is necessary to keep it straight.

With as little as ten degrees of flaps the aircraft will behave differently when landing. Its angle of attack will be lower, allowing a better view of the runway, and its approach speed can be reduce by about 5 mph. The aircraft has significantly less float and will settle onto the runway a lot more quickly.

With full flap landings, throttle management becomes important because, if the aircraft speed is reduced to much under 50 mph, it is possible to sink so quickly that the elevator will lose authority.

The Super Cub has retained its value remarkably well through the years due to a steady demand for the used aircraft. A total of about 9,000 have been produced in all.
