We received the following email from Paul Templeton: "Most of the rc airplanes in my collection are war birds, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the Nitroplanes rc P-40 Warhawk. I just love the shark mouth paint scheme, and the ad for the rc P-40 made it look terrific.

When the rc P-40 was delivered, I immediately noticed how well it was packed. I went through all of the parts and they were all there, and in good shape. The model went together easily and it was soon ready for a few final steps to make it look more realistic. I sprayed the entire model with dullcote to get rid of the new plane shine. I also airbrushed some exhaust and wear marks on it.

Now the rc P-40 was just about ready for its first flight. I double checked the c/g and controls to make sure that they were all working properly. The rc P-40 Warhawk needed to gather speed before finally climbing into the air. It likes to fly fast. It can do some very scale-like rolls, and they can be even faster if you increase the throws. There is plenty of power for loops from level flight. They can be as big as you like. If you pull back on the elevator very quickly, the rc P-40 will do a fantastic snap roll. When it is time to land, keep the speed up and grease it onto the runway.

The NitroPlanes rc P-40 has become one of my favorites. It has great performance and looks terrific too!"

Thank you for writing Paul. We appreciate your review of the NitroPlanes rc P-40.

The rc P-40.

The rc P-40 from Nitro Planes has a wingspan of 55" and is 43" long. It comes with a brushless motor and retractable landing gear. Weight is around 2.4 lbs.

The P-40 is the famed aircraft of the Flying Tigers and the first U.S. fighter aircraft capable of speeds over 300 mph. P-40 Warhawk aircraft are also known as the Tomahawks and Kittyhawks.

NitroPlanes rc P-40.

The above rc P-40 from NitroPlanes, comes in two color schemes, and is complete with radio, brushless motor, and everything else to fly right out of the box. Wingspan is 31 1/2" and length is 27". Weight is around 14 oz.

The P-40 was one of the first aircraft to engage Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. They were eventually flown by 27 U.S. allies during World War Two.

The rc P-40 from NitroPlanes.

NitroPlanes also has a rc P-40 for engine power, shown above. Its wingspan is 53 1/2" and it is 46" long. You will need from a .40 to .46 two stroke or .52 to .63 four stroke engine. Weight is about 6 lbs. all up.

At high speeds the P-40 was among the most maneuverable aircraft of its time. At slower speeds, however, it was far less maneuverable. It could out dive many other aircraft, but it lacked sustained climb and high altitude performance. This was due to the aircraft engine performance being limited by a single stage supercharger.

Mike Boliak and his rc P-40.

Mike Boliak's rc P-40 is built from Nick Ziroli plans. Power is by a Sachs 4.2. It has a wingspan of 94". You can find plans for sale at Nick Ziroli Plans.

P-40 aircraft were rugged, and could absorb a great deal of damage while still bringing their pilots back to base. Operational range was good by early war standards. They had almost double the range of many fighter aircraft, at the begining of the War, with the exception of Japanese fighter aircraft.

A rc P-40 from Turn Key RC.

The nice looking rc P-40 is from a Turn Key RC kit, built by Fritz Walker. Wingspan is 32". Powering it is a speed 400 size motor.

The P-40 lacked rear visibility, while forward visibility for landings and taxi was limited. That, plus a narrow landing gear, were responsible for quite a deal of damage to the aircraft while on the ground, especially while landing.

The rc P-40 from American Eagle.

The 1/5 scale rc P-40 from American Eagle has a wingspan of 96" and a length of 78". Engines can be Zenoah 62, Sachs 4.2 and larger. Weight is around 28 lbs.

The P-40 acquired a reputation as a tough, easy to maintain aircraft during operations in the deserts of North Africa, the jungles of New Guinea and the Dutch East Indies, and frigid conditions in the Soviet Union and Alaska.

Paul Wilson and his rc P-40.

Paul Wilson and his good looking rc P-40 built from a Byron kit has a wingspan that is 81" and length is 75". The scale rc model airplane has a fiberglass fuselage and molded wings. Power comes from a Sachs 4.2 engine and weight is around 29 lbs.

The P-40 proved effective when operating at lower altitudes. It was relatively inexpensive to produce and it continued in use as a ground support aircraft even after being surpassed as a fighter aircraft.

It is said that although the P-40 had a reputation as a mediocre aircraft, suitable only for close air support, more recent data show that it performed surprising well as an air-superiority aircraft. It sometimes had heavy losses, but it also took a heavy toll on Axis aircraft.

A total of 16,800 of the aircraft were produced.
