The top speed of the Piaggio P180 Avanti is higher than any FAR 23 certified turboprop aircraft currently produced.

Twin pusher turboprops, a sleek fuselage, forward canard, and a high "T" tail  enable Avanti aircraft to carry up to  nine passengers at 1,600 mile distances at jet-like speeds.

Due to its pusher prop propulsion, the Avanti does not sound like a typical turboprop. However the location of the propellers behind the passenger cabin keeps the interior noise level to an absolute minimum.

And all of this comfort comes with turboprop economy and efficiency. The Piaggio P180 Avanti is said to have 30 percent better fuel efficiency than a similar size turbojet aircraft.

A special laminar flow wing enables more engine power to go directly into pushing the aircraft forward through the air, rather than fighting drag producing friction.

The fuselage produces lift in conjunction with the main wing, front canards, and horizontal stabilizer located on top of a T-tail. The canards are not movable and therefore do not contribute to the control of the aircraft. The combination of the lifting surfaces makes for an aerodynamically efficient aircraft.

Piero Ferrari helped bring the P180 project to fruition after Avanti Aviation ran short of money. In October of 2005, the 100th aircraft rolled off of the factory assembly line.

Over 200 Piaggio P180 Avanti aircraft have been produced to date.

Pictured above is the rc Piaggio P180 Avanti, for sale by Simprop, built by Kevin Morris. It has a 55" wingspan and is powered by two brushless motors. Kevin installed retractable landing gear in his RC Airplane.  Kevin wrote us:  "Wanted to let you know that the original aircraft paint scheme came from a Canadian Piaggio P180 Avanti that I photographed at Oakland airport. My Piaggio Avanti, which is still flying, has a navigation light/ strobe system installed to add a bit more in the scale appearance."

We received the following email from Gabriele Tacchi:  "Attached are pictures of the rc P180 Avanti made by Angelo Montagna, a great friend of mine and one of the most important RC builders in Italy. It was made from his own plan starting from another smaller plan.

The picture was taken during the first exhibition of rc P180, when it was flown for the second time.

First, Angelo made a rc P180 a little smaller (30% less) in foam with two brushless motors to test the configuration. It was a success and that model is still operating. Then he proceeded with the 1/5 scale P180 Avanti rc model (2.70 meters, about 106" wingspan) you see in the photo. It is made completely from balsa and other woods, has operating gears with a sequencer for the two doors, two Moki 23 cc engines and working flaps. It was necessary to add brakes to the model because it lands fast and 14 kg (about 31 lbs.) is not easy to stop!

After the larger model's first flight we realized that the the test on the little foam rc P180 had been very useful, as no trimming was necessary! The take off was perfect, with no correction of any kind. The model looks very realistic and also the sound of the two engines is good.

Piaggio and Ferrari have a lot in common in performance and style so we choose this look."

We want to thank Gabriel for the pictures and description of the beautiful rc P180 Avanti. You can find them second and third below.

The last picture below is of a rc Piaggio P 180 Avanti rc scale model airplane built by John Stockinger. It is powered by two OS .61FX engines. Wingspan measures 95.5". All up weight is about 17 lbs.

You may want to check out the NextCraft website for a terrific project by Mike James. It shows what was originally to be a rc P180 Avanti kit. However, due to the expense of production, the kit never materialized.  Wingspan is 95 1/2", length 94 1/2" and power is from a pair of .46 two stroke engines.  Weight is around 15 lbs.

Guillow's has a rc P-180 Avanti for sale. It is a foamy and comes ready to fly with a wingspan of 18 1/2" and a length of 16". No additional details are available on the Guillow's website. This appears to be the typical two channel toy type model that is difficult to control, and is made of easily breakable parts, that is sold in retail toy stores. However, we have not had any experience with this particular model and could be wrong. If you can provide more information about the rc airplane, we would appreciate it.
