The Heinkel He 51 originated as a civil aviation training aircraft. It had a fabric covered all-metal airframe. Its powerful V-12 engine and streamlining enabled speeds nearing 200 MPH. It was one of the fastest biplanes of the early 1930's.

The aircraft was modified for use as a fighter by elongating its fuselage by some 16" and placing streamlined fairings around the main landing gear. In 1935 it was designated as a fighter aircraft for the Luftwaffe.

Modifications were made to reinforce the He 51 airframe for the demands of dive bombing before mass production started in 1936.

Initial deployment consisted of 79 aircraft used to support General Franco's forces in Spain during the Civil War. In the early days of the war the aircraft met with success when they engaged and defeated less modern biplane fighter aircraft.

Eventually the He 51 faced modern monoplane fighter aircraft supplied by the Soviet Union. The He 51 proved too slow to be effective against these aircraft. Their role was then changed to ground-attack and bombing where they proved effective, but were vulnerable to small arms fire due to their liquid cooled engines.

The Heinkel He 51 was the primary Luftwaffe fighter through 1938, after which it was used as a trainer until 1943. One version of the He 51 was equipped with floats.

Some 700 Heinkel He 51 aircraft of all versions were produced.
