The Heinkel He 177 was an innovative aircraft that never fulfilled its full potential.

In the late 1930's the German government requested that Heinkel produce a long range heavy bomber that was capable of dive bombing.

To keep drag to a minimum, Heinkel requested that Daimler Benz couple two engines in-line, with each engine driving one propeller.  The need for the aircraft to withstand the rigors of dive bombing resulted in increased aircraft weight.

During test flights of Heinkel He 177 prototypes, engine overheating became an issue. This led to engine fires and the downing of several aircraft. Yet, aircraft production proceeded.

Pilots appreciated the handling and performance of the He 177, but engine problems negated any positive attributes. A primary issue was found to be that the streamlined engine cowls fit so tightly around the engines that enough air didn't get to the engines to provide sufficient cooling. This was eventually remedied in the A5 late production models. However, too few were produced to have any effect on the war effort.

A small number of Heinkel He 177 aircraft entered service in France in 1942. These were used primarily as anti-shipping aircraft. These aircraft had limited success due to their unreliable engines and relatively short range when loaded with ordnance.

About 35 He 177 aircraft were assigned to bomb England in early 1944. Of those only four made it to their targets.

About 700 of the aircraft were deployed on the Russian Front as cargo transports and bombers. Few were capable of completing their missions due to engine problems.

A total of 1,169 Heinkel He 177 aircraft of all types were produced. Many never flew due to a lack of available engines.

Pictured above and in the first two pictures below is the impressive rc Heinkel He 177 scratch built by Dean Fisk. Its has a wingspan of 125 1/2" and is powered by a pair of Saito FA 82 engines. Weight is about 15 lbs.

The next picture below is of the rc Heinkel He 177 from plans for sale by Traplet. It has a wingspan of five feet.  Power can come from a pair of geared Speed 400 type motors.  Weight should be around 40 oz.

The last picture on this page is of the 1/48 scale Heinkel He 177 plastic model from a kit for sale from MPM, built by Rod Lees. It has a wingspan of 24" and is 18" long.  The kit consists of 320 pieces, is said to have good detail and an excellent cockpit.  However, it lacks locating pins for its parts and that may make some alignment difficult.

Aeronautica Modellbau has a rc Heinkel He 177 short kit for sale. Wingspan is 124" and length is 87". Engines can be from 10 to 15 cc. Plans for the rc Heinkel He 177 are for sale separately.

Airwar.ru has three view drawings of the Heinkel He 177.

You can also find three view drawings from which to build a rc Heinkel He 177 at The Blueprint.com.

Martin Loo of RC Groups started a construction thread for a rc Heinkel He 177. It has a 58" wingspan with power from geared Speed 400 motors. Weight is around 3 lbs. Plans are also posted in the thread.

ChrisP of RC Groups had a post about his rc Heinkel He 177 project. It has a wingspan of 69" and weight of about 3 lbs.

Tiffie of RC Universe posted about his rc Heinkel He 177 project. It has a 14' 9" wingspan and weighs around 44 lbs.

At YouTube arado240dd posted a video of his rc Heinkel He 177 taking off.
