The Dornier Do 24 amphibian was highly regarded by the Luftwaffe for its ruggedness and ability to operate in high seas. It was used primarily for reconnaissance and air sea rescue.

Dornier Do 24 aircraft were originally designed for use by the Royal Dutch Navy, and produced in both Germany and the Netherlands. When Germany occupied the Netherlands during World War II, all Dutch manufacturing and aircraft were taken over by the Luftwaffe.

Dornier Do 24 flying boats were used by Germany around the entire seaboard of occupied Europe. Their patrol area extended from northern Norway to the North Sea, the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Sea. The aircraft are credited with over 10,000 successful rescue operations.

Production of the Dornier Do 24 continued after the War through the early 1950's, with a number of aircraft being exported to the Philippines and Spain.

A Dornier Do 24, originally produced in 1943, was restored in 2004 with turboprop engines replacing the radials. It continues to fly to date.

A total of 280 Dornier Do 24 aircraft of all types were produced.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above is the scratch built rc Dornier Do 24 by LenBFP or RC Groups.  It is made primarily from foam. Wingspan is just 34" and weight is about 1 lb.  Power comes from three brushless motors that Len wound himself, turning shortened three blade 5 x 3 propellers.

The first picture below is of the rc giant scale Dornier Do 24 built by Marcel Heinrich. It has a wingspan of 148", and is 108" long.  Marcel uses Ultra 2000 motors geared 2:1 to motivate the 38 1/2 lb. scale model radio control airplane.

The next picture below is of the rc Dornier Do 24 built by Richard Sutherland. It has a wingspan of 75". Richard's scale rc airplane is powered by geared 05 motors.

The bottom two pictures are of Tobias Moser and his great looking 1/9 scale rc Dornier Do 24. It has a 132" wingspan and is powered by electric motors.
