A de Havilland DH.88 Comet won the Maidenhall England to Melbourne Australia MacRobertson Trophy race of 1934.

The de Havilland DH.88 Comet wings and fuselage were made of wood and all the fuel was carried ahead of the cockpit to keep the wings thin.

The de Havilland DH.88 Comet was the first ever aircraft produced by de Havilland with retractable landing gear, variable pitched props, and landing flaps on the same aircraft.

A total of 64 aircraft from around the world were entered into the MacRobertson Trophy race. Eventually twenty of them actually participated. Three of them were de Havilland DH.88 Comet aircraft. The winning de Havilland DH.88 Comet aircraft won with a time of just over 71 hours.

Five de Havilland DH.88 Comet aircraft were built in all.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above is Keith Shaw and his scratch built RC de Havilland DH.88 Comet airplane.  The radio control airplane has a wing span of 88". Powering the rc airplane are a pair of Astro Flight 25 electric motors. Weight of the radio control airplane is only 7.5 lbs.

The first picture below is of the RC de Havilland DH.88 airplane from Advanced Scale Models. Wing span of the radio control airplane is 88". The fuselage of the RC Airplane is 59" long.  ASM recommends powering the de Havilland DH.88 Comet radio control airplane with .32 to .40 two cycle engines or .52 four cycle engines.  If you prefer electric power for the RC Airplane, a pair of 36-30-3/1000 motors are recommended.

The second picture below is of the de Havilland DH.88 Comet radio control airplane from ARD Enterprises.  The rc airplane is 1/5 scale.  Wing span of the radio control airplane is 96".  Fuselage length of the RC Airplane is 65.5".  ARD recommends powering the radio control airplane with a pair of RCS 1.40 gas engines.  All up weight of the de Havilland DH.88 Comet RC Airplane is about 24 lbs.

You can get a short kit or plans for a de Havilland DH.88 Comet radio control airplane from Airborne.  The rc airplane has a 78" wing span and a 54" length.  To power the radio control airplane you will need a pair of .35 to .40 engines.  Upon completion the RC Airplane should weigh around 11 lbs.

We are not sure if the Hirobo de Havilland DH.88 Comet radio control airplane is still in production. The ARF RC Airplane has a 45" wing span and a length of 29.5".  Recommended power for the radio control airplane are a pair of Speed 380 type motors.

HET-RC has a RC de Havilland DH.88 Comet  airplane.  Wing span of the radio control airplane is 43".  Light ply and balsa are used in the construction of the RC Airplane.  You can fly the de Havilland DH.88 Comet radio control airplane with a pair of Speed 400 size motors.

The last picture on this page is of the de Havilland DH.88 Comet RC Airplane from RC International. Wing span of the radio control airplane is 81". Fuselage length of the RC Airplane is 56".  All fiberglass construction is used for the radio control airplane. RC International recommends a pair of Mega 22/20/4 or geared Mega 22/20/2 motors to power the de Havilland DH.88 Comet RC Airplane.  The radio control airplane will weigh about 7 to 8 lbs. upon completion.
