The Super Chipmunk is a high performance conversion of the deHavilland DHC-1 basic trainer. The original aircraft first flew in 1946 and became the primary basic trainer for the British and Canadian air forces.

The aircraft are long-lived, serving in the military through 1997. In addition to training, they also served in civil aviation as glider tugs and crop dusters, and with the military as observation and patrol aircraft.

Super Chipmunks were built tough to withstand the rigors of being flown by beginning pilots. They are known for responsive, yet docile handling, and easily coordinated control. With proper power management they can also be quite aerobatic, and are an air show favorite even in their unmodified form.

A number of the aircraft were converted for more lively air show performance and to compete in world aerobatics. These are the Super Chipmunks. One such aircraft won the American trophy for aerobatics in 1969. Another (pictured above), piloted by Jim “Fang” Maroney, performs in air shows throughout the United States.

Typical modifications for the Super Chipmunk involves shortening its wings about two to three feet, adding strips to the outer front edge of the wings to improve roll performance, replacing fabric covering with aluminum sheeting, and reinforcing the wing roots. The rudder is made about 1/4 larger than standard, and the entire tail of the aircraft is reinforced.

Of course, the heart of the aircraft modification is its larger engine. The standard 145 h.p. Gipsy Major engine is typically replaced with a 260 h.p. Lycoming. To accommodate the larger, heavier, and more powerful engine, a new cowling is fitted to the aircraft and the air frame strengthened.

The modifications add about about 60 lbs. to the total weight of the aircraft.

About 1,300 of the aircraft were produced. Of these, some 400 are still flying.  Super Chipmunk aircraft continue to perform at air shows around the world to this date.
