To date the Sukhoi T-50, sometimes referred to as the PAK FA, is in the prototype flight testing stages, having performed some 100 test flights. It is being developed as a supersonic stealth fighter/bomber that will replace a number of aging Russian aircraft.

The origins of the Sukhoi T-50 date back to 1989 when the then Soviet Union decided on a strategy of combining technology used on current fighter jet aircraft with the latest advances in super cruise and stealth engineering.

The project saw considerable delays with the break up of the Soviet Union and ensuing financial problems. Once funding for the program was reestablished, additional delays were encountered in the development of avionics and engine technology.

The first prototype Sukhoi T-50 flew on January 29, 2010. Two additional prototype Sukhoi T-50 have now joined it, first flying on March 3, 2011 and November 22, 2011. The Sukhoi T-50 made its first public appearance at the MAKS 2011 Air Show on August 17, 2011.

We are told that the design of the Sukhoi T-50 presents a minimal target for radar while enabling maximum maneuverability throughout its flight envelope. Its overall handling characteristics appear to enable high alpha flight angles. The use of its fuselage as a lifting body facilitates high altitude maneuverability.

Initial analysis of the Sukhoi T-50 shows that, at least initially, it may not be as stealthy as American fifth generation fighters. Of particular interest are the wing leading edge and engine intakes. If they remain unchanged, the aircraft will probably present a significant radar signature.

The digitally controlled twin engines of the Sukhoi T-50 will almost certainly allow super cruise flight, while giving it the potential of top speeds in the 1,600 + MPH range.

At this time the engines do not have thrust vectoring nozzles. While they would add to maneuverability, they could deter from the aircraft's stealth abilities.

The total internal fuel of the Sukhoi T-50 has been estimated to be around 21,685 lbs., giving the aircraft a long range. It is also equipped for in-flight refueling.

Internal weapons bays of the Sukhoi T-50 suggest that they should be able to carry up to eight air-to-air missiles, which is identical to the F-22. There are currently no indications of missiles being carried on the tips of the wings, but most certainly there will be provisions for them under the aircraft's wings. It appears that there is a provision for a cannon in the nose of the fuselage.

The cockpit of the Sukhoi T-50 is coated with a special composite material that minimizes its radar signature. The latest computerized avionics used by the Sukhoi T-50 are designed to reduce the pilot work load in order that full mission engagement is provided. Full tactical analysis is provided in real time to the pilot through an array of color monitors. The information is also available for instant analysis through a data exchange network synchronized to ground control. Data detection is through an array of antennas producing variable radiation patterns with actively modified output energy. These are designed to maximize acquisition of desired targets through a common data feed.

It is anticipated that along with Russia's most advanced avionics, the Sukhoi T-50 will carry both L band and X band radars. It is also possible that it will be equipped for electronic warfare. However, current thinking is that its primary mission will be for use as a stealth fighter/bomber.

The Indian government is contributing heavily to the development of the aircraft. It appears that the Sukhoi T-50 will be built by HAL in India. Eventually some 250 of the aircraft may be flown by the Indian A. F.

Russia anticipates placing an initial order for 50 of the 5th generation stealth aircraft.

It was announced that the Indian Air Force will be deploying up to 300 Sukhoi T-50 aircraft by the end of 2020.
