Siemens-Schuckert D fighters were a German effort to improve on popular French fighter aircraft of the day. Careful observation will find the exteriors of the aircraft nearly identical, except for their markings.
During prototype testing, in October of 1916, the German government was very impressed with the performance of the Siemens-Schuckert D. The aircraft especially had an excellent rate of climb.
An initial order was placed for a total of 150 aircraft. By June of 1917, only 95 of the aircraft had been produced due to difficulties encounter during engine production. By that time, Allied aircraft had surpassed the Siemens-Schuckert D in performance and the aircraft were used primarily for training new pilots.
By 1918 the aircraft had undergone a series of revisions. Engine power was up from 110 h.p. to 160 h.p. The final version of the aircraft was capable of performing with the best of the time. However, by the time they were introduced to the front lines, World War I was drawing to a close. The few aircraft in service were not sufficient to make a difference in the outcome of the war.
About 280 Siemens-Schuckert D aircraft of all types were produced.
