Savoia Marchetti S.55 sea planes featured a cockpit holding the pilot and co pilot in the center wing of the aircraft. The crew of the Savoia Marchetti S.55 rode in the two fuselages which also served as floats for the sea plane.
The Savoia Marchetti S.55 was equipped with two in-line back-to-back engines which had counter rotating propellers. These were located on pylons placed on top of the center section of the wing.
During 1926 the Savoia Marchetti S-55 set fourteen world records including speed, altitude and distance.
In February 1927 the Savoia Marchetti S.55 was one of the first airplanes to cross the Atlantic. This was four months before the solo crossing of Charles Lindberg in his Spirit of St. Louis airplane.
Eventually 24 Savoia Marchetti S.55 aircraft flying in a single formation crossed the Atlantic in 1933 on their way to an exposition in Chicago, IL.
During World War Two the Savoia Marchetti S.55 served in both the Luftwaffe and the Italian Air Forces as a patrol aircraft and a bomber.
The Savoia Marchetti S.55 first flew on August 12, 1925 and was deployed in 1926. The last S.55 was retired from service in 1945.
A total of 200 Savoia Marchetti S.55 aircraft were produced.
