Development of the Saab J35 Draken dates back to the late 1940's. It was at that time that the Swedish government requested an interceptor aircraft with the ability to fly at speeds at least fifty percent greater than other aircraft of the time. It would utilize a radar system making it capable of day/night, all weather flight, be maneuverable, and carry the latest air to air missiles. The aircraft would be equipped with a self starting system and have an under carriage sturdy enough to operate from unimproved fields.

The most distinguishing feature of the Draken is its wing planform. The high strength, low weight design enables the carrying of relatively large amounts of fuel and weapons, while providing both low speed maneuverability and high speed flight.

Another feature unique to the aircraft is a pair of wheels under its tail to enable nose high landings. Such landings utilized drag from the large wings to shorten landing distance. Typical landing distance, when a nose high approach was combined with the deployment of a drag parachute, was about 2,000 feet.

Aircraft historians tell us that the Draken was so advanced for its time that if Sweden had chosen, it could have served in many of the world's air forces. However, the country limited its overseas sales.

The aircraft received upgrades through it service career. Anti collision radar, the latest missiles, a faster firing cannon, and more powerful engines, were all added to the Draken.

A version of the Draken, exported to Denmark, was converted for use as a ground-attack aircraft.

Sweden flew Saab Draken aircraft through 1998, while the Australian Air Force operated the aircraft through 2005.

A total of 644 Saab Draken aircraft of all types were produced.

Pictured above is the rc Draken ARF for sale by Easy Tiger. Wingspan is 20 1/2", with a length of 30".  Included is a 64mm EDF unit. Weight is around 1 lb.

Nitro Planes used to have a rc Draken RTF for sale.  The ready to fly rc airplane included a radio, flight battery, motor and EDF unit.  We haven't seen it on their site recently.

In the first picture below is the rc Draken kit for sale by MBS RC Models.  It is made from balsa and plywood.  Wingspan is 31" and length is 50".  It needs a 70 mm fan and motor.  All up weight is about 2 1/2 lbs.

The second picture below is of the rc Draken for sale by Air-Tech.  It is a design by Manfred Eberhard and flown by Andreas Scholl. It has a wingspan of 54" and a length of 87".  For power Andreas uses a Jet Cat P120 turbine.  Weight is about 28 1/2 lbs.

The next picture is of the giant scale rc Draken from Jet-Team Liebetrau.  Its wingspan is 118" with a length of 73".  Suggested power is a P160 or P180 turbine engine.

The bottom picture is of the rc Draken ARF for sale by Nauwa Models. It has a 45" wingspan with a 75" length and weighs about 18 lbs. The fuselage is fiberglass construction with balsa sheeted foamy wings. You will need from a 15 - 20 lb. thrust turbine engine for power.

Shenzhen E-Do Model Co., Ltd., China has a rc scale model Draken RTF for sale in yellow, grey, or red paint schemes. Its wingspan is 20 1/2", length is 30", and weight is 15.87 oz. It comes ready to fly with a motor turning a 64 mm fan unit.

At Watt Flyer, Kosh reviewed a rc Draken for sale by Arrowplanes. It is a profile model with a 22" w/s. The Arrowplanes website linked to in the review doesn't appear to have anything to do with rc airplanes.

RC World International has a RTF Draken for sale with a 21" wingspan, a 30 1/2" length, and weight of about 1 lb.

Logical Psycho of RC Groups started a build thread for a rc J35 Draken. The thread has grown to include a number of builds and plans by other RC Group members.
