Pilatus PC-9 aircraft have been the major basic trainer for the Australian Defense Forces since 1987. They are manufactured in Switzerland.

The PC-9A has been described by some as the best single engine turboprop training aircraft in the world. Variations of the aircraft are flown by numerous countries around the world, including the United States.

The trainer is the aircraft used by the Australian Roulettes aerobatic flight demonstration team. Roulette pilots are fond of it.

Roulette pilots admit that the PC-9 may not be the best aircraft for air show aerobatics due to its very low wing loading that makes it tend to wander off course, especially when encountering strong cross winds.

However, a low wing loading also makes an aircraft more maneuverable with less control inputs, plus gives it lower take off and landing speeds.

The PC-9 also needs rather large trim adjustments to compensate for various throttle settings.

A total of 250 Pilatus PC-9 aircraft of all types have been manufactured to date.
