Northrop F-5 Tiger II aircraft are a vastly improved version of their earlier F-5 A Freedom Fighter.  It is flown by the Swiss, among others.

The Northrop F-5 has been built with one or two seats. The two seat version  of the aircraft has been used as a training aircraft in air forces around the world since 1964.

In addition to the Northrop F-5 being produced in the United States, both Canada and Spain had licensing agreements to build it.

The Northrop F-5 was first flown on August 11, 1972. It had more powerful engines than the original model and also a wider fuselage to accommodate the engines. Avionics of the aircraft were vastly improved as well. By 1980 some twenty air forces around the world were flying the aircraft.

The United States Air Force used the Northrop F-5 as an aggressor aircraft that simulated enemy aircraft for training of pilots.

Production of the Northrop F-5 ended in 1987. However, updated parts which continue to be produced, keep many of the aircraft operational to this date.

A total of over 2,700 Northrop F-5 aircraft of all types were produced.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above is the RC Northrop F-5 by Andreas Scholl.  The Andreas Scholl web site is in German, and we are not sure if he offers the radio control airplane for sale.  Wing span of the Northrop F-5 rc airplane is 66" and length is 118".  Andreas uses a Jet Cat P-120 turbine engine to power his radio control airplane. The RC airplane has an all up weight of 33 lbs.

ICARE has the last prototype version of the rc Northrop F-5.  The RC Airplane has a 27 1/2" wing span and a length of 30".  A fan unit comes with the radio control airplane kit.  However, you will have to add your own motor for the RC Airplane. ICARE recommends a Mega 16/7/3 or 4 motor to power their radio control airplane.   Materials used for the RC Airplane are a foam fuselage and injected foam wings.  When completed, the radio control airplane should weigh 17 to 20 oz.

The first picture below is of the Northrop F-5 RC Airplane from RC International.  The wing span of the radio control airplane is 66" and length is 112".  You will need a turbine producing at least 26 lbs. of thrust to power the Northrop F-5 rc Airplane.  The radio control airplane should weigh around 35 lbs.

The second picture below is of the Canterbury Sailplanes slope soarer version of the Northrop F-5 RC Airplane.  The radio control airplane has a wing span of 33" and a length of 32".  Primary material used in the construction of the RC Airplane is EPP foam.  The radio control airplane uses two channel control for the elevator and ailerons.  To fly the RC Airplane you will need at least a 7 mph wind blowing on to your slope.

The Electric Jet Factory has a Northrop F-5 rc airplane.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 31 1/2" and length is 45 1/2".  Recommended motor for the radio control airplane is a Typhoon 2W. Recommended fan for the Northrop F-5 rc airplane is a 480 Mini Fan.  The radio control airplane is made with a balsa and lite plywood fuselage and balsa over foam wings.

Thorjet has a Northrop F-5 RC Airplane kit.  The radio control airplane is 66" long.  You can get the RC Airplane with either a 41" or 48" wing.  To power the rc Northrop F-5 you will need either a O.S. .91 DF engine with a Thorjet 90 power unit or a MW 54 turbine.  Upon completion the RC Northrop F-5 airplane will weigh between 10 and 12 lbs.

The last picture on this page is of the Parkjets rc Northrop F-5 radio remote control airplane built from their plans.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 29" and length is 48".  A Himax 2015-4100 geared 4.4:1 with a 9 x 6 pusher propeller propels the radio control airplane.

Do you have a favorite Northrop F-5 rc airplane? Do you know of an additional rc Northrop F-5 arf, plan or kit? If so, please tell us about them.
