The Mikoyan Guerevich MiG-15 was the primary North Korean fighter aircraft used during the Korean War.

The engine of the aircraft was a virtual duplicate of the Rolls Royce Nene jet engine, obtained through industrial espionage.

The original mission of the MiG-15 was as a bomber interceptor. Equipped with a single 37 mm and two 23 mm cannons, it had the fire power to pierce the heaviest aircraft armor.

When first deployed in the Korean War, MiG-15 aircraft were a dominating force against U.S. bomber aircraft and their propeller driven escorts.

Initial engagements against NATO aircraft showed the MiG-15 to have the more superior armament of three heavy cannons versus six .50 cal. machine guns. They also could turn tighter at low altitudes, climb faster, and operate at higher altitudes than their opponents.

The United States quickly took advantage of their examination of a MiG-15 aircraft piloted by Lt. Ro Kun Suk when he defected to South Korea on September 19, 1953.

Mikoyan aircraft had many encounters with American Sabre jets before the Korean War ended. Although, by the end of the war, both were nearly identical in performance, United States aircraft pilots reported a victory ration of fourteen to one.

Superior training of U.S. pilots, a Soviet World War II gun sight incapable of performing well at jet aircraft speeds, and a reluctance of Soviet aircraft pilots to engage U.S. aircraft have all been said to account for the poor record of the MiG-15. Because the Soviet Union was technically not in the Korean War their pilots could not afford to be captured by the enemy.

Mikoyan aircraft became the primary jet fighter of Warsaw Pact nations until they were retried 1969.

Approximately 18,000 Mikoyan
Guerevich MiG-15 aircraft were produced in all.
