The first Hawker Tempest prototype flew on Sept. 2, 1942. Pilots reported a great performance improvement over prior Hawker aircraft particularly in climb rate and maximum altitude.

Hawker Tempest aircraft became operational in April of 1944 and were primarily used for troop support and ground attack missions.

When Germany used V-1 flying bombs to attack England, the Hawker Tempest went up against them. Its ability to fly fast at lower altitudes helped it excel in the role of V-1 hunter.  In 1944 the Hawker Tempest accounted for one third of all flying bombs downed. They downed almost 900 flying bombs before the war ended.

Hawker Tempest aircraft supported Allied ground troops on their march towards Berlin. During their initial 30 days of operations, they downed 52 Luftwaffe aircraft.

In ground attack operations Hawker Tempest aircraft strafed and bombed vital German supply lines putting almost 100 locomotives out of action.

Hawker Tempest aircraft are credited with downing at least twenty Luftwaffe jet aircraft in air to air combat. Rather than intercepting the jet aircraft directly, they flew over the airfields where the jets were based. They pounced on the jets when they slowed to land and were unable to accelerate quickly.

A total of 1,414 Hawker Tempest aircraft of all types were built.

Radio Control Airplane

 RC Airplane from Vailly Aviation.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above and immediately below is the RC Hawker Tempest airplane built by David Wigley. The radio control airplane is from a Vailly Aviation kit.  Wing span of the rc airplane is 96" and length is 81 1/2".  Recommended power for the radio control airplane can come from 3.7 to 4.2 c.i.d. engines.  David uses a Quadra Q-75 in his rc Hawker Tempest airplane.  All up weight of the radio control airplane can range from 30 to 40 lbs.

Kit Cutters Inc. will sell you a full kit, short kit, or plans for their RC Hawker Tempest airplane. Their radio control airplane is from Jerry Bates Plans. Wing span of the rc Hawker Tempest airplane is 87".  Recommended power for the radio control airplane can be a ST-3000 or Zenoah G-62 engine.

If you are looking for something much smaller, you may want to check out the Hawker Tempest radio control airplane from Green Air Design.  Their RC Hawker Tempest airplane has a wing span of just 22".  Depron foam makes up the material used to construct their radio control airplane.  Green Air recommends a GAD brushless motor to power their rc airplane.

Kit Cutters has a 75.5" wing span Hawker Tempest radio control airplane.  The rc Hawker Tempest airplane comes from Nexus plans. Kit cutters will sell you a short kit, full kit, or plans for the radio control airplane.

The second picture below is of the RC Hawker Tempest airplane from Pitch Scala Hobby. The radio control airplane has a wing span of 80". Fuselage length of the rc Hawker Tempest airplane comes to 69". You will need a 30 ccm engine to power the radio control airplane.

The bottom picture on this page is of the RC Hawker Tempest airplane built by Ian Bailey.  The radio control airplane is from Scale Models Plans. Wing span of the rc Hawker Tempest airplane is 77" and length is 64".  You will need a minimum 20 cc four cycle engine or from 25 to 44 cc two cycle engines to power the radio control airplane.  All up weight of the rc airplane will be about 13 lbs.
